SHIELDS’ Exodus Program provides a unique model of substance abuse treatment and mental health services, in which comprehensive family-centered treatment, case management and related social services are provided to residents living with their families in an 86-unit apartment complex in the city of Compton. Women’s Care Cottage is an Independent/Transitional living program assisting homeless young women coming out of emergency shelters, foster care and probation. Women’s Care Cottage is a safe place where young women who have been either critically homeless or in the criminal justice or foster care system can start a new life and develop the ability to live independently with pride and dignity while accomplishing their goals.
Located in South Los Angeles, the Taper Center offers mental health services to a community that is predominantly African American and Latino. Children and their families receive care at the clinic, in their homes, and at area schools. For more than 20 years, the community has welcomed it as the place to come for mental health services and other support. The Taper Center also helps adults receiving aid through CalWORKs to overcome the psychological barriers that interfere with their ability to find and retain work.
At Didi Hirsch's Metro Center, located in the Westlake area of Los Angeles, we serve children, teens and their families. Most are recent Latino immigrants living in the surrounding area encompassing many primarily economically distressed neighborhoods. Most parents work long hours and have access only to public transportation. Mental health services are provided in over a dozen public and charter schools in the area, in the home and at the Center. Comprehensive case management services are offered to help families meet the many challenges they face.
Comprehensive mental health services for children, families, and adults of all ages are available here. The majority of clients are African American, Latino, and of all eleven Didi Hirsch sites, the Inglewood Center serves the most children and families. Treatment is offered on site, as well as in the home, and at nearly 30 schools. The Center is also distinguished by its expertise with very young children (0-5 years old).
